Bracketology 101

WARNING: The following contains information that may not be suitable for anyone with interests outside the realm of competitive sports. In other words, if you're not a sports super-geek, proceed only with extreme caution. Bracketology (or even a vague understanding of it) is NOT a prerequisite for full participation in the Bunganello Olympiad.

The Bunganello Olympiad will consist of 5 simultaneously running tournaments. (Four-Square "heats" will also be running concurrently.) The tournaments will be of a modified double elimination format, not unlike the College World Series. This means that all participants will be divided into two double-elimination "brackets."

Tournament Bracket 1

Tournament Bracket 2

Each of these brackets will run like a standard double-elimination tournament, with the winners of the two brackets squaring off in a best-of-three series as part of the Championship Round. The last two participants to be knocked out in each bracket will play in a 5th place match and a 3rd place match to complete the Championship Round.

Tournament Championship Round

As shown above, "Championship Points" will be awarded to each of the 6 participants to reach the Championship Round in the following manner:

     Tournament Champion -- 12 pts.

     Runner-up -- 9pts.

     3rd Place -- 6 pts.

     4th Place -- 4 pts.

     5th Place -- 2 pts.

     6th Place -- 1 pt.

The Nation that accumulates the most Championship Points through both the tournaments and the Four-Square heats will be crowned Bunganello Olympic Champions. The Olympian who acquires the highest point total after all events will be awarded the gold medal as the overall Olympic Champion.

NOTES:

  • Tournaments will be structured to ensure no players from the same Nation will face-off until the Championship Round.
  • The brackets shown here indicate an 8-Nation Olympiad. It may become necessary to modify the brackets to accommodate either fewer or more participants, but the Championship Round will remain the same.
  • Since each Nation is submitting only one two-person team to the Foosball event, it may become necessary to run the Foosball tournament in a standard double-elimination format. Third place and 5th place matches will still be required to award Championship Points.
